‘Elon Musk of Essex’ prepares to call in administrators

An electric truck start-up founded by an entrepreneur dubbed the Elon Musk of Essex is on the brink of administration as it seeks an emergency rescue deal. Essex-based Tevva Motors has filed a notice to appoint administrators after failing to secure enough investment to keep the company afloat. The notice buys the company temporary legal protection from creditors during a last-ditch effort to find additional funds. Founded in 2013 by Asher Bennett – the older brother of former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett and an ex-submarine officer in the Israeli Navy – Tevva aimed to disrupt the diesel-powered lorry market by launching trucks equipped with hydrogen fuel-cell technology. It signed agreements in principle with the likes of Royal Mail and Travis Perkins to supply its flagship 7.5-tonne electric trucks, which were set to be built at its manufacturing site in Tilbury, Essex.
